The attractions
of Arona (beyond Guffanti)
The city of Arona (approximately 15,000 inhabitants)
is a tourist center on the Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore.
Begin your walk at lakeside, at the historic town square,
Piazza del Popolo, with its medieval buildings or on
Cavour Boulevard a pedestrian walkway. If you love nature
and history, you can go to the dominating, once inhabited,
fortified Rocca: the former castle, destroyed by order
of Napoleon in 1800, is today a park center, from whose
razed grounds one enjoys an excellent panoramic view
of the lake below. A little further away, in the town
of San Carlo, is the colossal (35 meters high) bronze
covered statue of San Carlo Borromeo, dating back to
the 17th century. Other exciting attractions in the
nearby regional park include Lagoni di Mercurago, famous
for its moist ambiances and Golasecchian archaeological
sites. On the outskirts, the beauties of Stresa stand
out, renown for its great lodgings and charming island
studded gulf. For those who prefer excursions in the
mountains, you can get there by taking Expressway A26,
towards the Ossola Valley and its smaller valleys (Val
Vigezzo, Val Grande, Val Formazza...).
